Batu Hardwood Decking

Our Premium grade, kiln-dried Batu Hardwood Decking is suitable for a variety of applications, from Sundecks and Porches, to Privacy Screens and Fences – where the rich, classic look of more expensive woods like teak or mahogany is available at a fraction of the price. Versatile, durable and beautiful, our Nova Wood USA Batu Decking is the finest quality material available on the market today and the superior choice for your next outdoor project.

Natural Beauty and Durability

Fine landscape architecture demands the highest quality materials. With rich natural beauty and legendary durability, Nova Batu Decking is a great choice for exterior decking applications. Batu (also known as Membatu, Selangan Batu or Red Balau) is known for its hardness, beauty and natural durability. Professional builders and do-it-yourselfers alike enjoy working with Nova Batu Decking because of its high quality and consistency.

We carefully select only the finest timber to achieve a nearly blemish free decking with excellent color consistency, superior strength and natural durability, thus ensuring there is no compromise on quality. While there are more than 200 different species of Meranti / Philippine Mahogany found throughout Asia, our Batu Decking utilizes only a select few species found within the Shorea Genus. Although similar in appearance to
Meranti / Philippine Mahogany, Nova Batu decking is twice as hard and considerably more durable. With top of the line beauty and tough, long lasting performance, our Batu Decking is the product which others try to emulate. Because we stake our reputation on the superior quality of our products, we are confident that when your project is complete, you will be satisfied with the distinctive beauty and performance of Nova Batu Decking.

Colour, Texture & Grain

Heartwood from Batu Hardwood Decking ranges from a medium red to a deep red / brown with purple tinges and often has resin canals with white contents in concentric lines on end surfaces which produce a warm and visually striking effect. The texture is moderately fine and grain is typically interlocked. Our Red Balau Batu Hardwood is carefully graded in order to achieve a nearly blemish-free deck plank with excellent colour consistency as well as superior strength and of course – natural resistance to rot and decay.

batu-oil-vs-natural-finish-poco-building-suppliesINSTALLATION & FINISHING

We recommend stainless steel screws through the face of every board, two screws per joist. To minimize splitting pre-drill every hole and for best results use our SmartBit Pro-Plug Countersink system (see video below) which provides a real Batu plug over the top of the screw for a desirable Hidden Fastener finish. To prevent surface checking, discoloration, and cupping, we recommend that Batu decking be finished on all four sides, prior to or immediately after installation. To maintain the natural color, a high quality penetrating oil finish with UV inhibitors should be used. While there are a number of Hardwood Oils available specifically designed for this type of application – our research suggests that Penofin’s Hardwood Formula provides the best protection and longevity of coating, for a rich lustre with no surface film. Check out the Video below for information on how to apply this product – and for more How-to Video’s check out our YouTube page.

Pro-Plug-System-for-Wood-componentsPRO PLUG® SYSTEM for Wood combines the strength of top-down fastening with the high-end finish of face grain wood plugs. This comprehensive system allows deck builders to drill, screw, glue and plug all types of hardwoods in a fraction of the time required for traditional plug fastening methods. All of the Pro Plug System components have been carefully and precisely engineered to maximize performance and provide the best finished result. The system features face grain wood plugs, stainless fasteners, a pre-drilling and counter-boring tool and a glue nozzle that applies glue to the sidewalls of the counter-bored hole. See opposite for available wood types.

Pro-Plug-Wood-product-featuresPRO PLUG® SYSTEM for Wood – Product Features

The stop collar spins free of the drill and counterbore assembly, and is fitted with a rubber o-ring that prevents damage to the board surface. The hole is complete when the stop collar stops spinning.

The case hardened counterbore portion of the tool is designed to perfectly match the geometry of the System’s specially designed fasteners and plugs.

Drill bits feature Powerbolic fluting, which cuts through decking and flooring more than twice as fast as standard wood bits, even dense hardwoods. The Tool also comes packaged with a spare stub bit, designed for plug-only installations (with no fasteners).

Decking kits come with Grade 305 stainless steel, star drive, 8 x 2-1/2″ plug fasteners. Flooring kits come with zinc plated, #2 square drive, 8 x 1-5/8″ plug fasteners.

Pro-plug-glue-nozle5. PRO PLUG GLUE NOZZLE

The patented Pro Plug Glue Nozzle is designed to apply standard wood glue to the sidewalls of the hole created by the Pro Plug Tool for Wood, in order to achieve maximum holding power. The Nozzle attaches to any interior or exterior 4 or 8 ounce bottle of Titebond® wood glue and any 4, 8 or 16 ounce bottle of Elmer’s® wood glue.

Pro-plug-ipe6. WOOD PLUGS

Face grain wood plugs are available in many species. A unique chamfer and reduced flare angle offers easy insertion and an extremely tight fit with minimal to zero push-up from weathering. Plugs are inserted completely, with no need for sawing or chiseling.

In addition to the Pro Plug Tool for Wood and a Decking/Flooring Kit, installation requires a power drill, a power sander, wood glue and a plastic or wood mallet. (Pro tip: for best results, and to prolong the life of the Pro Plug Tool, use a corded drill). Note: The Pro Plug System for Wood consists of several parts designed to work together as a system. All of these parts must be used together, as instructed, to ensure proper function. For a pdf containing detailed installation instructions (also included with every kit), see the link below.

Pro Plug Decking Kits come with Grade 305 stainless steel deck screws that are 2-1/2″ (63mm) long, for decking that is between 3/4″ (19mm) and 1-1/4″ (32mm) thick. Pro Plug Flooring Kits come with hardened steel zinc plated screws that are 1-5/8″ (41mm) long, for flooring that is 3/4″ (19mm) thick.

Each Pro Plug Tool for Wood package includes a complete tool, 2 standard size replacement drill bits, a stub bit (for plug only installations) and a hex wrench for replacing drill bits. Pro Plug Tool for Wood Replacement Drill Bits are also available and sold in packs of 5.

We strongly recommend face fasten only for all Batu as it does not perform well using hidden fasteners such as EB-TY and Ipe Clip. For a hidden look, use the Pro-Plug system. Please note that whilst they are adequate and perhaps more suited to other species of decking like western red cedar, both Kreg Jig and Camo Fastening Systems do not meet the manufacturers specifications in terms of approved fasteners and can result in a less than finished look in comparison to Starborn Pro Plug System or Starborn Stainless Steel ‘Headcote’ Screws

Environmental Information

The Asia and Pacific region is home to 900 million people. Since most of these people live in rural areas, the region’s forests play an important role in helping to sustain their basic needs and to maintain their quality of life. Since extractive utilization of their forests will continue to be an essential component of economic development for most tropical countries, wood-based companies and enterprises are a key to making a successful transition to sustainability in tropical forests. Selective hardwood extraction, not clear cutting, is the best way to add value to the standing forest resource in tropical forests.

The tropical wood industry plays a key role in preserving tropical forests by providing significant economic value and employment without chopping the forest down. Buying tropical hardwood products helps to preserve the standing forest while providing important jobs for the people that live there.

We are committed to the preservation and responsible utilization and management of our forest resources. We strongly encourage all of our suppliers to follow the best industry practices in order to minimize damage to the environment and ensure long term sustainability. Our products are in compliance with all local, national and international laws and regulations.
